Its core vision was to be a University of choice in nurturing innovation and talent in science, technology and development. The School of Public Health at Moi University was initially established in 1997 as the institute of Public health, but later evolved into a school of Public Health in 1999, with a primary focus on research and teaching. Over the last 12 years it has expanded and now offers a range of bachelors and graduate programs including PhD programs.
The School has retained the innovative problem based and community-based approaches to training and has over 20 established field sites for training and research. Most of these are Ministry of Health facilities. Both the undergraduate and postgraduate curricula have strong elements of operations research that is conducted at these sites as well as the neighboring community. The focus has primarily been on malaria; Road Traffic Accidents (RTAs); and HIV and AIDS through the Academic Model for Providing Access to Healthcare (AMPATH).Moi University
