The College of Public Health and Medical Sciences of Jimma University (JU) evolved from the then Jimma Institute of Health Sciences established in 1983. The university itself was established as a public higher education institution in December 1999 by the amalgamation of Jimma Institute of Health Sciences and Jimma College of Agriculture. JU is Ethiopia's first Innovative Community Oriented Education Institution of higher learning ( http://www.ju.edu.et/ ).
Then the College of Public Health and Medical Sciences was finally established by the amalgamation of the former Faculty of Public Health and Medical Faculty 2009. The college aims at producing high quality multidisciplinary health care professionals through its community based educational (CBE) philosophy, with competence in health care delivery and other.
The college offers 9 undergraduate and 22 post-graduate academic degrees in various biomedical, clinical and public health fields. In 2010 there were 285 academic staffs in the college of Public Health and Medical Sciences, who are engaged in teaching, research, community service as well as consultancy services.
